If you’re learning to drive in Morley or anywhere in Leeds, there’s a lot of conflicting information online about prices, lesson requirements, and driving rules. As a local manual driving school based in Morley, BB Driving School deals with these questions every day. Run by Justin Holmes, a Grade A DVSA Approved Instructor with over 25 years of experience, we’ve put together this comprehensive FAQ to answer the most common questions learners ask.
How Much Do Driving Lessons Cost in Leeds?
Driving lesson prices in Leeds typically range from £28 to £38 per hour for manual lessons, and £30 to £42 per hour for automatic . The average across Leeds schools sits at around £38 per hour .
Most driving schools offer 10-15% discounts when you book blocks of 10 or more hours . Many also provide reduced rates for students, NHS staff, and Blue Light workers (police, fire, ambulance) .
It’s worth noting that fuel price increases have affected lesson costs in 2026. One instructor told the BBC she had to raise her prices by 50p to £37.50 per hour . Another learner reported paying £80 for a two-hour lesson .
A word of advice: Don’t just chase the cheapest rate. A slightly pricier instructor with a high pass rate often means fewer total lessons, saving you money in the long run .
How Much Should a 2-Hour Driving Lesson Cost?
Based on current Leeds market rates, a two-hour manual lesson should cost between £56 and £76 . Some schools charge around £68-75 for a standard two-hour lesson .
At BB Driving School, we offer flexible lesson lengths including 1-hour, 1.5-hour, and 2-hour blocks. Two-hour lessons give you enough time to properly practise complex manoeuvres like parallel parking without feeling rushed.
How to Claim 40 Hours of Free Driving Lessons
The Motability Foundation’s Driving Lessons Grant provides up to 40 hours of funded driving lessons for eligible disabled people .
To qualify, you must:
- Have a Motability Scheme vehicle (or one arriving within four months)
- Hold a provisional UK driving licence
- Have passed your theory test (this became a requirement from July 2024)
- Receive a means-tested benefit such as Universal Credit, Income Support, or Housing Benefit
The grant is arranged through the AA Driving School and covers lessons with a local instructor . It does not cover theory or practical test fees .
Important: This grant is only available to Motability Scheme customers who meet the additional criteria. It is not available to everyone receiving benefits .
Is 20 Driving Lessons Enough to Pass?
The DVSA recommends an average of 45 hours of professional lessons plus 22 hours of private practice before taking your test . That works out to roughly 20 to 25 one-hour lessons with an instructor .
However, these are averages. Some learners are test-ready after 30 hours, while others need 60 or more . The number you need depends on:
- Your starting point (previous driving experience helps)
- How often you take lessons (two or three per week is better than one every fortnight)
- The quality of your instructor
20 lessons could be enough, but it depends entirely on your individual progress. At BB Driving School, Justin continuously assesses your skills using the DVSA’s 27-skill framework and won’t recommend taking your test until you’re genuinely ready.
What Is the “4-Hour Rule” for Driving?
There are two different “4-hour rules” depending on context.
For professional drivers: Under GB domestic drivers’ hours rules, if a driver does not drive for more than 4 hours a day in any week, they are exempt from all GB domestic rules for that week .
For learner drivers: There is no “4-hour rule” limiting how long you can practise. Private driving is not subject to GB domestic drivers’ hours rules . What matters more for learners is maintaining regular lesson frequency — two or three lessons per week is far more effective than one lesson every fortnight .
What Are the Top 3 Reasons People Fail UK Driving Tests?
According to official DVSA data from April 2024 to March 2025, the top three failure reasons are :
1. Not making effective observations at junctions. This is the number one reason learners fail. Ineffective observation was a factor in 47% of all collisions in 2023. Common mistakes include failing to judge approaching vehicle speeds, entering roundabouts when vehicles are approaching from the right, and making no observations at all when emerging from junctions.
2. Not using mirrors correctly when changing direction. This includes not checking mirrors when exiting roundabouts, changing lanes on dual carriageways without proper observation, and cutting across following vehicles.
3. Not moving off safely. This covers moving off from the side of the road, from behind parked vehicles, or after an emergency stop without proper blind spot checks.
At BB Driving School, we focus heavily on these three areas, particularly around the busy routes near Thornbury and Heckmondwike test centres.
Can I Take My Driving Test with Only 10 Lessons of 2 Hours Each?
There is no legal minimum number of lessons required before taking your practical test . You can book your test whenever you feel ready.
However, 20 hours of professional instruction is below the DVSA average of 45 hours . Whether you’re ready depends on your individual skill level and any private practice you’ve had.
Your instructor is the best judge. If you can drive for an hour without intervention, handle junctions confidently, and perform all manoeuvres accurately, you may be close to ready .
Do I Fail if I Can’t Parallel Park?
No, not automatically. Parallel parking is one of four possible manoeuvres the examiner may ask you to perform, so there’s roughly a one in four chance it comes up on your test .
The examiner assesses three things :
- Control: Smooth clutch and steering, no stalling or kerbing
- Observation: Effective all-round checks throughout
- Accuracy: A reasonable finishing position, close to and roughly parallel with the kerb
You can take corrections and still pass. If your angle is wrong, you’re allowed to pull forward and adjust. What matters is that you make proper observations and react to other road users .
Lightly touching the kerb is usually a driving fault, not a serious one. Mounting the kerb or hitting it hard enough to suggest loss of control can be marked as serious .
Can I Have 12 Points and Still Drive?
Technically, accumulating 12 or more penalty points within three years means you MUST be disqualified for a minimum of six months .
However, courts have discretionary power not to disqualify if they consider that disqualification would cause “exceptional hardship” . This is a decision for the courts, not the DVSA .
For new drivers, stricter rules apply. If you accumulate 6 or more points within two years of passing your test, your licence is automatically revoked . You must reapply for a provisional licence and pass both theory and practical tests again.
What Is the “6 and 9 Hour Rule”?
This applies to working time regulations for professional drivers, not learner drivers.
Under these rules, working between 6 and 9 hours per day requires breaks totaling 30 minutes. If more than 9 hours is worked, breaks must total 45 minutes . Each break must be at least 15 minutes .
This does not apply to driving lessons or private practice.
What Are the New Driving Rules in 2026?
For Northern Ireland: A Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) scheme is being introduced, expected from October 2026. This includes a mandatory minimum six-month learning period, a training log, an extended restricted period of 24 months (up from 12), and night-time driving restrictions for drivers under 24 in the first six months.
For England, Scotland, and Wales: The government is consulting on introducing a minimum learning period, but no new restrictions have been confirmed yet. The consultation is ongoing.
How Many Hours Can You Legally Drive in a Day in the UK?
For private driving, there is no legal daily driving limit under GB domestic rules .
For professional drivers, GB domestic rules generally limit driving to 10 hours per day, with specific rest requirements .
Can I Still Drive at 90 Years Old?
Yes. There is no legal age limit for driving in the UK.
At age 70, your licence expires and must be renewed. After that, you renew every three years, self-declaring that you meet the视力 standard and are fit to drive. Renewal is a declaration process, not a re-test.
Which Medical Conditions Stop You from Driving?
The DVSA maintains a list of “notifiable medical conditions” that must be declared. These include:
- Epilepsy
- Sudden loss of consciousness (fainting)
- Severe heart conditions
- Insulin-dependent diabetes
- Certain vision impairments
- Dementia
- Severe mental health conditions
You must proactively declare any condition that could affect safe driving. Failure to declare can result in fines up to £1,000 and potentially more serious legal consequences if an accident occurs.
What Are the Two New Tests for Drivers Over 70?
This is not accurate. There are no new “tests” for drivers over 70.
The government is consulting on changes to the renewal process, potentially including mandatory vision testing (replacing self-declaration) and cognitive assessments at the three-year renewal point. These would be health checks, not driving skill tests. The claim that over-70s will be forced to re-take their driving test is incorrect.
How Many 100-Year-Olds Still Drive in the UK?
According to government data from 2023, there were 597 drivers aged 100 or over holding valid licences in the UK. This includes one woman aged 110 and one man aged 107. The number has more than tripled in a decade, from 195 in 2013.
Over 4 million licence holders are aged 70 or over, a 60% increase over the past decade.
